What is Luxury?

Before opening TPP, I worked for more than 25 years as a public relations and marketing professional.  During that time, I have seen the luxury market grow rapidly around the world. Sometimes, so rapidly, it seems products just keep getting more and more expensive, but not necessarily of better quality. Popular culture has created a mass luxury mentality where quality is no longer the driver; instead it’s about labels, labels, labels. Labels and branding were originally created so you, the customer, would know who made your product, and the care and artistry that went into it. Today, in America and around the world, that ideal can seem very far away when you walk down the average main street or high street and see sameness all around.

But true luxury isn't about the 'labels' or even the price tag. Luxury is, or at least should be, about the original ideal behind the product —the quality, design, craftsmanship, uniqueness, and the experience—the provenance if you will—of owning it! Think of the most treasured object you bought on a vacation or a wonderful gift from a loved one. Price and labels hardly matter. What really matters is where you discovered it, how the fabric feels, the meaning behind the smallest of details on a hand painted item, or the ability of a scent from a special candle to transport you to another place and time.  Where you bought it, can be just as important as the item itself.
